At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in 2011, held in Davos, Switzerland, Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, discovered the Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGLs) and recognized its potential to nurture the next generation of African leaders from diverse backgrounds. This chance encounter ignited a vision that aligned seamlessly with Aliko Dangote’s aspirations for a healthier, better-educated, and more empowered Africa through strategic investments fostering social change, improved healthcare, quality education, and enhanced empowerment opportunities.

The Young Global Leaders program, known for accelerating a dynamic community of outstanding young individuals worldwide, resonated with Aliko Dangote’s vision. Through the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), he forged a partnership with the World Economic Forum to establish the Aliko Dangote African Fellowship program. This initiative aimed to ensure the full engagement of young African leaders from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and non-business entities, who might otherwise struggle to participate in the Forum’s Young Global Leaders Community. The fellowship covered the expenses of participation in World Economic Forum and YGL-led events for six years for each Fellow.

Now in its twelfth year of collaboration with the WEF YGL program, the Aliko Dangote (WEF Africa YGL) Fellows continue to represent the continent on the global stage and contribute to their communities in various impactful ways. This partnership has enriched the diversity of the YGL community, incorporating a vital African perspective, inspiring change, and ensuring that all voices are heard in global decision-making.

The World Economic Forum nominates up to two hundred exceptional young leaders under 40 for a six-year membership period since the inception of the YGL program twenty years ago. Over the past twelve years of collaboration with Dangote, 15-20 young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa have been included, following a rigorous selection process. At any given time, the African YGL Community comprises around eighty active members, with 75% of them eligible for the Dangote Fellowship.

Fatima Aliko Dangote, the Executive Director of Dangote Industries, expressed pride in the diversity and high representation of female fellows in the 2023 Cohort. Nine selected YGLs from various sectors, including media/arts/entertainment, technology & innovation, health, and government, showcase the growing influence of African women in leadership roles.

The ADF-YGL Lagos Convening, held on September 8th, provided a remarkable opportunity for current and alumni YGL Africa Fellows to meet and engage with their patron, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, at the site of his ambitious project, the multi-billion-dollar Petroleum complex at Lekki. Here, they interacted with Alhaji Aliko Dangote and senior executives of the Dangote Group, drawing inspiration from his vision and engaging in informal discussions about their journey as YGLs and the impact the community has had on their personal and professional growth.

After touring the Fertilizer and Refinery complex, the alumni expressed their admiration for Aliko Dangote, describing him as “the best hope for Africa.” Victor Ochen, an Aliko Dangote YGL Alum and Executive Director of the African Youth Initiative Network in Uganda, praised Dangote’s significant investment in the continent, particularly in youth employment. He acknowledged Dangote’s generosity in providing financial support for young African leaders to participate in YGL events, making active participation possible for many who would otherwise be unable to attend.

She leads Janngo Capital, Africa’s largest gender-equal tech fund, and is the Chairwoman of the Board of Auchan in Africa. Her journey, made possible through YGL participation, underscores the potential for positive change and growth.

Managing Director/CEO of the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), Zouera Youssoufou, expressed gratitude to Dangote for his unwavering support of the YGLs. She assured him that his investment is bearing fruit, as these young global leaders are making significant contributions in their respective fields, living up to the expectations of becoming true African future leaders.
