The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has been alerted to an incident involving a Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft bearing Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BXR, operated by ValueJet Airlines. The event occurred at approximately 3:32 pm (Local Time) on November 14, 2023.
Dr. James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, announced that the Bureau has initiated an investigation to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident. NSIB investigators are already on-site at the Port Harcourt International Airport, he added.
“Upon landing from Lagos, the aircraft, carrying 62 passengers and 5 crew members, overshot the runway at runway 03. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, and all passengers and crew were safely evacuated. Additionally, there was no reported damage to the aircraft.
The NSIB urges the public and media to refrain from speculative discussions regarding the potential causes of the incident. They emphasize the importance of respecting the privacy of those on board.
As a multimodal investigation agency, Dr Odaudu said the NSIB is mandated to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria. The primary objective is to identify probable causes and provide safety recommendations to prevent recurrence, he said.
