We want to welcome aboard aviation and innovation enthusiasts! This year, we embark on a journey of innovation and sustainability, exploring the transformative potential of advanced air mobility (AAM). In this global pursuit, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a guiding compass towards a more equitable and resilient future. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) strongly advocates for sustainable aviation, aligning its strategic objectives with the SDGs and playing a pivotal role in global efforts.

The SDGs, a set of 17 interconnected global goals with 169 targets, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals address a wide range of social, economic, and environmental challenges, aiming for a sustainable and equitable future. Topics include poverty eradication, gender equality, clean energy, climate action, and sustainable cities.

Progress in one SDG area often depends on progress in others, guided by the principle of leaving no one behind.

AAM is set to transform transportation through innovative aviation technologies like electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The goal is to enhance accessibility, promote sustainability, and revolutionize transportation norms.

As AAM is implemented globally, it is crucial to navigate this complex landscape collaboratively and forward-thinking. ICAO is on a mission to understand the SDGs and their intersection with AAM. This relationship underscores AAM’s potential to revolutionize aviation and provide global benefits, impacting urban planning, agriculture, supply chain logistics, emergency services, and public health and safety.

Safety is a prerequisite, but embedding sustainability principles and practices at the core of AAM development is paramount. The ICAO expert group – Advanced Air Mobility Study Group (AAM SG) – aims to develop a framework and recommendations for sustainable AAM integration.

The First Advanced Air Mobility Symposium (AAM 2024), from September 9-12, 2024, at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, Canada, is a global platform for dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders. Special sessions on the nexus between AAM and the SDGs will provide forums for sharing insights, best practices, and innovative approaches.

Key themes include AAM’s role in sustainable urban and rural development, enhancing accessibility, and fostering inclusive growth. Discussions will also address challenges like equitable access to AAM services, environmental sustainability, and regulatory frameworks for responsible AAM deployment.

Collaboration and engagement between all potential stakeholders, even beyond traditional aviation, are essential for navigating the correlations between AAM and the SDGs. ICAO’s ongoing activities on the SDGs represent crucial steps, providing platforms for dialogue, innovation, and collaboration that shape AAM’s trajectory and contribute to global sustainability goals.

As we prepare for takeoff, our destination is not just a place but a vision of a sustainable and inclusive future enabled by advanced air mobility solutions. See you at AAM 2024 – where the sky’s the limit!
