The Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung has said the private sector must come into sports sponsorship in the country to help the government.
Dalung, who addressed a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, said the ministry was out to engage youths in the country through sports from the grassroots.
“Nigerians should understand that the direction for sports in the country has to change from a total reliance on the government to that of private sponsorship,” he said.
“The ministry is currently working to ensure that what obtains in other countries happens in Nigeria as well. We cannot continue to rely heavily on the government to fully fund sports. That is why we are working to create an enabling environment for the private sector to come in and develop sports from the grassroots.
“The various sports federations have to seek alternative sources of funding their programmes and competitions. That doesn’t mean the government will not help when necessary, but the ministry has to be notified early for that to happen.”
Dalung, who lamented the inability of the country to hold the biennial National Sports Festival since 2012, said the ministry would ensure that the event holds next year.
