Flames engulfed parts of Guinness Nigeria Plc Aba brewery on Friday as fire fighters from the Aba and Umuahia Fire Service and nearby companies fought hard to contain the fire from spreading.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the fire started at about 11am on Friday and wasn’t contained until 6:46pm.

The Aba Fire Service said they met some challenges at the scene, which included inadequate water to fight the flames. They reached out to the Umuahia Fire Service, which sent back-up. They also received support from nearby companies as well as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which provided a foaming agent that helped contain the fire.

Speaking at the scene, Okezie Uche, Aba Fire Service Commander, said that “Poor house-keeping” might have been responsible for the fire, stressing that when the staff could not contain the fire, they called the fire service.

Eric Otuonyye, the Station Officer in charge of security at the brewery, said workers noticed the fire and smoke in the compound at about 11:30am from a nearby bush, hence they mobilized to fight it.

“I think the fire got to a chemical that has escalated it, this is after 6 p.m. and if it is not put out, I do not know what will happen at night.

“I believe the fire must have started from our compound. But there is a bush close to our fence on that side where it started, that is what we are suspecting.”

Mr Otuonye said that the damage was to be estimated in billions of Naira.

He said the brewery had been shut down since July 2018, adding that only a few police personnel and company security guards were around.
