At a pivotal event hosted by the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) today, Mrs. Oti Olaniyi, Acting Director of the Medium Taxpayers Department-South, delivered a keynote address on behalf of Dr. Zaach Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The engagement, held at Commerce House, Lagos, centered on the theme “Emerging Tax Matters,” and highlighted significant reforms and innovations in Nigeria’s tax system.
Addressing an audience of industry leaders, policymakers, and tax professionals, Dr Adedeji emphasized the critical role of taxation in national development. He outlined the FIRS’s comprehensive approach to restructuring aimed at improving customer service and operational efficiency. The reorganization focuses on decentralizing functions and streamlining processes to create a more agile and responsive institution.
Key reforms include the creation of three operational groups—Small, Medium, and Large Taxpayers—to better cater to varying taxpayer needs and enhance service delivery. The FIRS has also established a One-Stop-Shop for tax administration, integrating all tax-related functions to simplify compliance for businesses.
FIRS Boss discussed the integration of technology into tax administration through the Taxpro Max platform, which supports e-filing, e-reporting, and e-registration. This digital shift aims to facilitate easier tax management and improve overall efficiency.
The keynote also addressed recent legislative changes under the Finance Act, including provisions for taxing digital services and simplifying Withholding Tax (WHT) regulations. These reforms aim to broaden the tax base and address challenges posed by the digital economy and tax evasion.
In addition to structural and technological advancements, the FIRS is focusing on enhancing tax education and public awareness. Initiatives such as Tax Thursdays and the establishment of a contact center are designed to improve taxpayer understanding and engagement.
The session concluded with a call for continued collaboration and feedback to refine and implement these reforms effectively. Dr Adedeji urged stakeholders to support the FIRS’s efforts in building a robust tax system that drives sustainable economic growth and development.
This engagement marks a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria’s tax administration and fostering a more equitable and efficient tax environment.
