Lawmakers promise to prioritise Maritime sector

The House of Representatives says it will continue to give priority to the maritime sector for its contributions to Nigeria’s economic development.

Speaker, Yakubu Dogara made the remark at an investigative hearing organised by the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, in Abuja.

The Speaker, through the Chief Whip of the House, AlHassan Ado Doguwa emphasised the potentials of the maritime sector to the stabilisation of the nation’s ailing economy.

Mr. Dogara said, “It is imperative to dig out the truth of these alleged corrupt practices in NIMASA so that an end can be put to such economic crimes, if they are proven to be true, to enable the masses enjoy their legitimate benefits from our common dividends.”

The House of Representatives has always taken the issue of diligent investigation of alleged economic crimes with all seriousness, resulting in the uncovering of massive fraud and eventually leading to more transparency and accountability by all arms and agencies of government.  

This is in pursuance of the thematic issues in our Legislative Agenda to effect public demand for transparency and accountability by all Arms and Agencies of Government.” 

The committee Chairman, Muhammad Umar Bago said the investigative hearing was to dig out alleged corrupt practices in Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.

According to Mr. Bago, the aim is to put an end to such economic crimes for Nigerians to enjoy the common dividends.
