The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has provided reassurance to Nigerians amidst ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector, emphasizing that solutions are on the horizon. Speaking during a visit to the Ihovbo Power Plant in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State, Adelabu disclosed that substantial funds have been allocated by the Federal Government to address issues within the energy sector. However, he acknowledged the persistent struggles faced by the majority of Nigerians in accessing reliable electricity.

Adelabu expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure observed during his tour of the power installations, highlighting the significant investments made by Nigeria in power generating plants. Contrary to common belief, he noted that the plants are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and are meticulously maintained. Despite their condition, Adelabu lamented the capacity distortions hindering optimal power generation.

The Ihovbo Power Plant, owned by the Federal Government under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, impressed Adelabu with its four gas plants boasting a total capacity of approximately 500 megawatts. However, he noted with concern that only one turbine was operational, generating a mere 20% of the installed capacity. Adelabu attributed this underutilization to challenges such as gas shortages, which the government is actively addressing.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to mitigate these challenges, Adelabu revealed discussions held with President Bola Tinubu and key ministries, including Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, and Power, aimed at resolving outstanding debts affecting gas supply. He expressed optimism that relief was imminent, emphasizing the government’s commitment to optimizing Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

As the nation grapples with power shortages, Adelabu’s reassurances offer a glimmer of hope for Nigerians. With concerted efforts underway to address underlying issues and enhance capacity utilization, stakeholders remain hopeful for tangible improvements in the power sector, paving the way for increased access to reliable electricity across the country.
