Following the recent ditching of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter operated by Eastwind Aviation near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Port Harcourt, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and collaborating rescue teams have intensified their search and recovery efforts. The incident, which occurred on October 24, 2024, prompted an immediate response from various emergency teams who began a round-the-clock operation to locate the helicopter and any potential survivors.

In an update provided this morning, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance for the NSIB, shared that search teams resumed operations at 07:30 AM local time. In an effort to increase the likelihood of finding any debris or signs of survivors, the search area has been expanded.

A team of NSIB Aviation Safety Investigators, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, arrived at the Nuim Antan facility by 11:30 AM to conduct interviews and gather critical details for the ongoing investigation. The team completed on-site interviews with facility staff and departed by mid-afternoon.

Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB, highlighted the challenges faced by the teams, especially given the location’s depth and limited visibility as daylight fades. At approximately 6:15 PM, search efforts were suspended due to low visibility, with no debris, survivors, or bodies located so far. However, divers succeeded in establishing a secure diving perimeter at an expected wreck location, with the depth measured between 40 to 50 meters. Specialized diving equipment will be deployed to aid search operations at this identified site.

“We commend the tireless efforts of our rescue teams and all supporting partners involved in this operation,” Captain Badeh said. “The NSIB is committed to conducting a thorough, transparent investigation and to providing updates as new information emerges.”

The NSIB has assured the public that it will continue utilizing all available resources in its ongoing search, upholding its commitment to a transparent analysis of the incident and to ensuring the safety of Nigeria’s aviation sector. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
