The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, announced a strategic collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enhance security and revenue generation at the Nigeria Customs Service headquarters in Abuja.
During his address, Adeniyi congratulated the newly appointed Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in promoting good governance and ensuring the safety and economic well-being of the public.
“In terms of vision, I see an alignment between NCS and the FRSC. It is key that we find a way to collaborate,” Adeniyi said. “We did sign a memorandum of understanding, and it is working very well. It has room for improvement to deepen collaboration. It is a perfect start that we have achieved the integration of the Customs and the Road Safety System.”
He assured Nigerians that the partnership would significantly reduce incidents of stolen vehicles and that the federal government had provided an opportunity for proper documentation of improperly imported vehicles, with a waiver period currently winding down. Additionally, he reiterated the NCS’s commitment to confiscating substandard tires to ensure road safety.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the CGC’s leadership, highlighting improvements in staff welfare, working conditions, and the prompt payment of benefits since his appointment. He commended the integration of vehicle information systems between the NCS and FRSC, enhancing national security, revenue generation, and the ease of doing business.
Mohammed pointed out that the National Vehicle Identification System, housing millions of vehicle records, supports the investigative efforts of security agencies such as the Nigerian Police, Interpol, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service. He also called for the CGC’s support in enforcing restrictions on importing vehicles beyond their age limit, noting the high fatalities associated with dilapidated vehicles during crises.
“The relationship between NCS and FRSC will continually grow stronger, and we are ready to support the CGC to deliver the promises and the goals he aims to achieve during his tenure,” Mohammed concluded, emphasizing that collaboration is key to trade modernization and enhanced security.
