The Nigerian Shippers’ Council made a significant stride in modernizing port operations with the unveiling of its Online Registration Portal for both regulated Port Service Providers and Users. The event, held on February 6, 2024, at the Kal Classic Hotel in Onne, Rivers State, featured a welcome address by Mr. Glory Onojedo, Director of the South-South Zone of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, presented by Mrs. Patricia Osuma, Director of Public Relations.

Mr. Onojedo emphasized the portal’s role in enhancing competitiveness and ensuring fair access for all players within the port industry. He highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting a regulatory environment conducive to competitive pricing and efficient service delivery, as outlined in the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Act Cap N133LFN 2024.

Key accomplishments of the NSC’s strategic plan implementation included moderating costs, providing guidelines for tariff setting, promoting transport infrastructure development, and establishing mechanisms for compliance monitoring and complaint resolution.

During the event, participants were guided through the registration process, fee structures, document requirements, and certificate download via a visual presentation by Mr. Benjamin Ivwighreghweta, the Deputy Director of ICT.

Barr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, highlighted the portal’s significance in transitioning from manual to automated registration, streamlining processes, and eliminating physical interfaces. He stressed the importance of registration for all service providers and users to avoid sanctions and ensure legal operation at the nation’s seaports.

Dr. Charles Chukwuemeka Anozie, MD/CEO of Mion Global Emergency Services Limited and Chairman of the Export Trade Group at the PortHarcourt Chamber of Commerce, commended the NSC for the portal update, anticipating improved efficiency and ease of doing business at the ports.

Addressing concerns over freight differentials, Dr. Anozie urged the Nigerian government to address issues contributing to high charges, particularly citing exchange rate fluctuations.

The highlight of the event was the launch of the online registration portal manual booklet, distributed to stakeholders and participants, marking a significant step towards modernizing port operations and promoting transparency and efficiency in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
