NIMASA Reaffirms Commitment to Harnessing Blue Economy for National Growth

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, represented by Mr. Owoh Fidelis, the Deputy Director, Special Duties, has praised the organizers of a national discourse on the human capital component, assets, and infrastructure for the Blue Economy. Mobereola emphasized the importance of the maritime sector to global commerce and trade, noting that it accounts for over 80% of global commerce.
National Discourse event held on October 17, 2024 at the Rock View Hotel, Apapa-Lagos with Themed “The Human Capital Component, Assets, and Infrastructure for the Blue Economy”, the event highlighted Nigeria’s progress in realizing the potential of its maritime resources, guided by the National Maritime Strategy (NMS). This strategy seeks to ensure the nation’s economic prosperity through the sustainable use of its maritime assets, he added.
Dr. Mobereola noted that the Federal Government’s creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy signals its commitment to diversifying the economy. The Blue Economy rests on three pillars: economic growth, social equity, and environmental preservation. It strives to balance these elements for long-term sustainability while reducing dependency on oil and gas.
NIMASA is actively working with stakeholders to harness the opportunities within the Blue Economy, with significant focus on sectors like fishing and deep seabed mining. Sensitization campaigns within coastal communities aim to deepen understanding of sustainable maritime practices, preserving ocean resources for future generations.
Regarding infrastructure, NIMASA has embraced the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to accelerate maritime development. The agency collaborates closely with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to ensure the successful implementation of the Blue Economy framework.
Dr. Mobereola appealed to the media for constructive reporting on the maritime sector, acknowledging their crucial role in promoting the Blue Economy. He expressed optimism that Nigeria will soon begin to see the tangible benefits of these initiatives.
He concluded with encouraged ongoing collaboration among all stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Blue Economy.
