Nimet signs MoU with NIMASA on Nigerian waters safety and Security

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have finally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
for the purpose of setting up Marine meteorological observations/stations in Nigeria and the provision of marine meteorological products and services for maritime activities on Nigerian Territorial waters.

In a bid to achieve their mandates, both agencies have agreed to work together to develop new joint and sustainable resources to be deployed to further develop the marine meteorological capacities of both parties and for the sustenance of the meteorological products and services to be provided under this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Speaking at the signing ceremony which took place at the NIMASA headquarters in Lagos, the Director General/CEO NiMet, Prof Mansur Bako Matazu said the partnership with NIMASA was for all Nigerians and for the interest of Nigeria.

Prof. Matazu assured that NiMet will extend and standardise its services to the marine and maritime sector just as it entails in the aviation sector, bringing credibility to the nation’s indigenous skills, products and services.

He said it will be pursued with all seriousness while adhering to all standards operating procedures adding that over one year NiMet over N1b for investment in the marine industry

Matazu said it will be packaged like the pilot’s briefing in the aviation industry

He commended NIMASA for the bold step as the project was fast becoming a reality

In his remarks, the Director General/ CEO NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Yusuf Jamoh, enjoined Nigerians to watch out, not only for daily forecast from NiMet, but a forecast for maritime safety and security through NiMet from NIMASA.

The signing of the MoU between NiMet and NIMASA is a milestone agreement that will ensure sustainable development in the maritime environment by providing various relevant meteorological tools and products.

The object of the collaborative activities between NiMet and NIMASA is to enhance the capacity of the Parties with a view to providing relevant meteorological tools, products and services to seafarers and ocean-going vessels that will allow sustainable development of the marine environment and delivery of products and services to the various sectors related to maritime safety, security, marine environment protection and other maritime activities.

In pursuance of this MOU, the Parties agree to utilize their existing marine meteorological observatories/stations to establish additional observatories in various locations to enhance the fulfillment of parties’ obligations and implementation of the MOU.

Part of the MoU is to warn ships of gales, storms and tropical cyclones by the issue of information in text and, as far as practicable, graphic form, using the appropriate shore-based facilities for terrestrial and space radio communications services.

NiMet is to also issue, at least twice daily, by terrestrial and space radio-communication services, as appropriate, weather information suitable for shipping containing data, analyses, warnings and forecasts of weather, waves and ice.

Such information shall be transmitted in text and, as far as practicable, graphic form, including meteorological analysis and prognosis charts transmitted by facsimile or in digital form for reconstitution on board the ship’s data processing system.
