Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Chief Dr. George Moghalu
, The Management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) extends its heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Niger and Adamawa States, as well as the families affected by the recent tragic boat mishaps in Mokwa, Niger State, and Njuwa River in Yola South, Adamawa State.
According to the reports endorsed by Jibril Darda’u General Manager, Corporate Affairs Department from our Area offices in the affected States have shed light on the unfortunate incidents, which, in hindsight, could have been avoided. These incidents were primarily attributed to overloading and the failure to wear life jackets by both boat operators and passengers, despite NIWA’s continuous efforts to distribute life jackets and raise awareness about safety on our waterways.
Darda’u said NIWA remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals traveling on Nigeria’s waterways. We are resolute in our determination to enforce compliance with safety standards among boat operators and passengers. The cardinal principles of safety on our waterways will continue to be a top priority for NIWA, he concluded.
