The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a full-scale investigation into the fatal crash of a Sikorsky SK76c helicopter, with registration 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation. The tragic incident occurred during a routine flight on Thursday, October 24, 2024, when the helicopter plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Calabar, at approximately 11:22 AM local time.
The helicopter, which was transporting eight people—six passengers and two crew members—was en route from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the Anton Offshore Facility when it lost contact with air traffic controllers at around 10:52 AM. Despite flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), the aircraft failed to transmit an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal, requiring authorities to manually determine the crash site to hasten rescue operations.
According to Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, search and rescue operations were immediately launched. The NSIB is working closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Armed Forces, and other critical agencies. So far, three bodies have been recovered, while efforts continue to locate additional survivors, aided by support from neighbouring aerodromes, military units, and low-flying aircraft.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB, expressed heartfelt condolences, saying: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families impacted by this heartbreaking incident. We are fully dedicated to uncovering the factors that led to this accident and ensuring a comprehensive investigation. We urge the public to avoid speculation during this delicate period, as we work towards bringing clarity and accountability.”
The NSIB is dispatching a specialized go-team to the accident site to gather evidence and conduct a thorough analysis. A preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks to provide updates on the investigation’s progress.
The Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and safety improvements in Nigeria’s aviation sector, as it continues to pursue independent and robust accident investigations aimed at enhancing transportation safety.
