Plans are underway to makes teaching profession attractive in Nigeria

Nigeria is presently making great efforts to ensure teachers’ quality and teachers’ professionalism are upgraded in both public and private schools across the country.This is confirmed by the Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye at an event in honour of the participants of the just concluded Teachers Reality T.V show.

Professor Ajiboye who said the support given to the initiative was part of federal government’s effort to reposition teaching profession in Nigeria.

“The teachers reality T.V show will encourage teachers to do more on their jobs interms of innovative ideas and enhance their productivity on the job”

“Teachers are actually nation builders and it has been long that teachers were never appreciated by any group but for this group to create teachers reality T.V show and coming up with the idea and executing same was a great achievement,” he said.

The TRCN registrar said that the teachers reality T.V show will encourage teachers across the country to perform better in their services.

“I believe that this country is going far when we talk about teachers professionalism ,the support goverment is giving the program is part of efforts to make sure that teachers are highly recognised ,they deserve to be celebrated ,I hereby commend the convener of the teachers reality t.v show,” he said.

Speaking on appreciation of teachers world over, Professor Ajiboye said globally, teachers are now being celebrated following the Global teachers price and the Institution of the AU teachers prize.

“In Nigeria we have maltina’s teachers award but to bring up a reality show for teachers is a wonderful idea and it is commendable, I believe very strongly that this will help our teachers to grow, “ he stated.

The convener of the initiative, Ubaka Enuagwuna, a professional Educator with over 13 years experience in the teaching profession says his desire to improve the welfare and relevance of teachers in Nigeria, gave birth to the Teachers Reality TV Show.

“ I am an educator, and I know what teachers go through to build the nation,after looking at what teachers go through and the kind of support they get interms of remuneration and other welfare package,I thought of how we can appreciate them ,so we thought of giving them a platform to showcase what teachers do to improve the lives of future generation,” Enuagwunua said.

On the criteria of selection, Ubaka said over one thousand entrances were submitted but consideration was given to only 15 teachers who were given opportunities based on their Nationality as Nigerians, ages 21-45 years, professionally trained teachers and certified to practice the teaching profession by TRCN.

“The applicants were also requested to do some write ups after which we found only 15 considerable among them,” Ubaka said.

Enuagwuna stressed that the Teachers Reality t.v show has come to stay in Africa and that it is a new dawn for teachers in Nigeria, explaining that he was determined to take the initiative to greater heights.

“It is the first edition ,although we encountered alot of challenges , but due to passion we were able to pull through ,we now have many coporate bodies indicating interest to partner with us towards sponsoring the second edition,” he said.

Ubaka described the support from the government as massive .

“the TRCN encouraged me and my team to go all out to bring ylthe reality show into reality ,the TRCN organised dinner in honour of the first teacher reality t.v show in Nigeria”

15 teachers participated in the reality t.v show and three winners emerged.

Vivian Ifeagwu, the winner of Nigeria’s first Teachers’ reality t.v show ,a Primary Four teacher at Imperial Gate School, Lekki, Lagos, got N1.5million and a trip to Dubai as her reward of the constest.

According to Vivian, “I was being myself ,the passion was out ,my perception about teaching ,teachers are not boring people”

Ms Ifeagwu said the lesson she learnt from the house is to be herself as all times.

Ist runner up, Olawale Oladimeji, a teacher at Christ Ambassador International College Ibadan said the Teachers reality t.v show has made him an ambassador of the teaching profession.he won N1m with a trip to Dubai.

The 2nd runner up, John Attah Ojonugwa, a teacher at Nigeria Navy secondary school Okora said the TRT, is beginning to reposition teaching career in Nigeria . He won the sum.of N500,000 naira with a trip to Dubai.
