Polaris Bank Limited, in collaboration with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), has expanded its tree-planting initiative to Kano State, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and nationwide land restoration. The latest phase of this initiative took place at Ajingi Community Reserve, Kunkurawa, Kano, on Friday, August 30, 2024.

This tree-planting effort is part of Polaris Bank’s broader environmental strategy, which commenced during the World Environment Day celebrations in June 2024. Themed “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” the initiative was first launched at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. Now in Kano, the program aims to mitigate the effects of desertification and contribute to the restoration of degraded lands across the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO of Polaris Bank, Mahmud Kawu, Divisional Head for the North, expressed the Bank’s strong dedication to the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with the Bank’s core values and sustainability goals. “At Polaris Bank, sustainability is not just a buzzword—it’s ingrained in every aspect of our operations. From responsible banking to environmental protection, we are committed to driving positive change and contributing to the green economy.”

Kawu explained that the partnership with the NCF, a leading non-governmental organization focused on sustainable development and nature conservation, underscores the Bank’s dedication to promoting sustainable growth and environmental stewardship. He urged the Kano community to embrace the initiative, noting that their involvement is key to ensuring long-term environmental preservation in the region.

“Today’s tree-planting at Ajingi Community Reserve, Kunkurawa, is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability. This collaboration with the NCF aims to enhance local biodiversity, combat soil erosion, and raise public awareness about the importance of environmental preservation,” Kawu said.

He highlighted the numerous benefits of the initiative, which include restoring degraded areas, reducing carbon footprints by absorbing CO2, and enhancing the overall ecosystem. “In addition to these immediate environmental benefits, the project also contributes to long-term climate regulation and promotes the well-being of the communities we serve.”

Kawu concluded by reiterating Polaris Bank’s pledge to continue its efforts toward environmental stewardship and community empowerment through sustainable projects like the tree-planting initiative. “This project is a reflection of our corporate responsibility and commitment to a greener, healthier future for all,” he noted.

The initiative is expected to continue expanding to other states, furthering Polaris Bank’s mission to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable economic development across Nigeria.
