In a recent press statement issued by the State House, President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate settlement of the outstanding electricity bill owed to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). This directive comes following a thorough reconciliation of accounts between the State House Management and the AEDC.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, highlighted that the President’s decision was prompted by the successful reconciliation process. Initially, the AEDC had advertised a debt claim of N923 million in newspapers. However, upon examination, it was revealed that the actual outstanding bill amounted to N342,352,217.46. This figure was confirmed in a letter dated February 14, 2024, from the AEDC management to the State House Permanent Secretary.

With the discrepancy addressed and both parties satisfied with the reconciliation, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, has assured that the debt will be settled before the week’s end. Moreover, in a bid to set a precedent, Gbajabiamila urged other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to follow suit by reconciling their accounts with the AEDC and promptly settling their electricity bills.
