During the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Annual International Conference & Exhibition (NAICE) 2023 held in Lagos, Mr. Effiong Okon, Director of New Energy at Seplat Energy, delivered a keynote speech titled ‘Empowering Energy Sustainability: Strategies for Developing Countries’. Okon, representing Seplat Energy’s CEO, Mr. Roger Brown, emphasized the pivotal role of governments in shaping the energy industry’s future.
“We are showcasing Nigeria’s success to global investors, serving as an inspiration for others. Sustainability and energy transition define our business ethos and form the core of our strategic approach. Our vision is to facilitate universal energy access, thereby driving transformation across Africa, especially in its largest economy,” Okon stated.
Highlighting the immense potential for job creation within Africa’s energy sector, Okon explained, “Africa’s energy landscape offers a wealth of opportunities that span the entire value chain. To ensure success, governments must establish conducive regulatory frameworks, ensure infrastructure security and reliability, and promote strong governance. Private sector partnerships should be chosen wisely, based on competence and budgetary considerations.”
Okon also emphasized the critical role of energy access in Africa’s progress: “Achieving universal energy access is pivotal to Africa’s growth. This requires substantial investment, much of which will flow into the private sector. By facilitating energy access for both domestic use and cooking, Africa can unlock significant socio-economic benefits, elevating living standards across the continent.”
While pursuing this growth, Okon stressed the importance of environmental consciousness: “As we work towards this energy revolution, it’s imperative to navigate the transition to cleaner energy sources like natural gas and renewables, while safeguarding our planet for future generations.”
