Also in the same vein: Concrete Pole producers in Rivers State have lauded the Standards Organisation of Nigeria’s (SON’s) enforcement operations to sanitise the concrete pole industry.
The commendation according to the producers was apt considering the vital importance concrete pole plays in the electrification of both rural and urban communities in the country.
SON during a courtesy visit to concrete pole producers in Rivers and Bayelsa State, received accolades for its unrelenting efforts at ensuring that pole producers manufacture concrete poles that conform to standards.
The State Coordinator, SON,  Engr Ololade Ayoola, said that the SON is committed to put the quacks in the concrete pole trade out of business.
He emphasized that substandard poles are classified as life danger products because in case of failure, lives and property are endangered.
Engr Ayoola said the essence of this round of visit is also to show that SON will continue to encourage manufacturers who are committed to doing the right thing.
“SON is not an oppressor but a facilitator of business and in line with the FG’s Ease of Doing Business policy, will continue to engage the operators in this trade for a win-win situation.
He appealed to Discos and individuals purchasing electric concrete poles to patronise approved and certified producers.
Chief Sunny Nwafor, Managing Director of Somax Electric Poles one of the producers in certification process commended SON for putting the concrete producers on their toes while also ensuring that they conform to standards.
He said before Engr Ayoola came on board some of them were not keen on standards but as it is now, it is no longer business as usual.
He commended Engr Ayoola and the SON officials for the good work done as regards eliminating fake poles in Rivers State.
Mr Chukwuemeka Daniel MD of Dan Bless Construction who also embraced SON conformity process after the previous enforcement action, moved to a bigger and better location, extended his curing pond to also accommodate 40ft poles for High tension, received commendation from Engr Ayoola.

The last stop for the visit was to SSK Integrated Services has its sancrete blocks certified and concrete poles at the last stage of certification. The MD Mr Stephen Kabaari appreciated SON for its efforts in putting the sector in order and bringing sanity to the production of electric concrete poles. He lamented that most times the blackout experienced in the state when it rains is as a result of precautionary measures taken by DISCOs who are weary of electric poles falling due to wind storm. He said when electric poles do not conform to standards; they become hazards to the society. Therefore they are determined to continue to partner with SON to bring about the desired change and improvement in the electric concrete poles market.
