Sterling Bank, one of Africa’s fastest-growing companies and Nigeria’s leading financial institution, has joined forces with the Lagos State Government to improve healthcare provision in the state. The collaboration led to the introduction of the Ilera Eko Virtual Booths, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bringing healthcare closer to the people and expanding the reach of the health insurance scheme, Ilera Eko, across Lagos.

Mr. Obinna Ukachukwu, Divisional Head of Business Growth at Sterling Bank, made the announcement during the inaugural Lagos State Insurance Summit held in the city. He highlighted the bank’s partnership with the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) to leverage technology and establish health insurance booths in various informal business clusters around the state. This strategic approach aims to cater to the needs of the informal sector, where many residents earn daily wages from their trade locations, making it challenging for them to access healthcare facilities promptly.

The bank takes responsibility for financing the construction of these booths and providing the necessary resources for their efficient management. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized the importance of aligning with the National Health Insurance Authority Act and complying with the Lagos State Health Scheme law during his keynote address at the event.

Approximately 300 of these virtual booths will be strategically placed across Lagos State, offering residents virtual access to doctors through telemedicine for consultations and diagnosis. Prescriptions will be provided and can be filled at the nearest community pharmacy, ensuring seamless healthcare access.

The Summit, attended by stakeholders, including the Chairman of LASHMA Governing Board, Dr. Adebayo Adedewe, aimed to foster innovation and collaboration in achieving universal healthcare coverage in the state. Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, the Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, expressed the agency’s commitment to operationalizing the social health plan, which is a critical step towards achieving universal healthcare coverage.

Sterling Bank’s partnership with the Lagos State Government reflects its commitment to the HEART of Sterling strategy, which focuses on investments in Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Transportation sectors. The bank has garnered recognition for its irreverent brand voice, remarkable talent management practices, and recent accolades, including being named Africa’s Most Valuable Commercial Bank Brand for 2023 by the African Brand Magazine and ranking among the top 100 fastest-growing companies in Africa by the prestigious Financial Times.
