In a candid interview, ACP Afegbai Albert Igbafe, Director of the Aviation Security Services, shared his mission to enhance aviation security and address longstanding issues at the nation’s airports. In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s airport security and enhance aviation safety, the Aviation Security Services (AVSEC), under the leadership of ACP Albert Igbafe. He has embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of the security framework at the nation’s airports.
Upon taking office, ACP Igbafe faced numerous challenges, including gaps identified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audit. In response, AVSEC has made notable strides to address these issues, starting with the installation and upgrading of CCTV cameras and introducing stringent access control measures. “We found that many concessionaires and unauthorized personnel were accessing the airport unchecked. To counter this, we’ve implemented access controls to ensure that every individual entering the airport is properly screened,” ACP Igbafe explained.
One of the perennial issues that ACP Igbafe has been tackling is the airport perimeter fencing. With vast land areas to secure, AVSEC has faced significant challenges due to encroachments and security breaches. “We have been handling as many as 20 to 30 intruders nightly, and with the perimeter fencing repeatedly compromised by neighboring communities, it has been an ongoing battle. To strengthen our defenses, we’ve recently launched an armed unit within AVSEC and have ramped up joint patrols with the military, Air Force, and AVSEC personnel,” he noted.
In a bid to address more complex issues like alleged money laundering through private airlines, ACP Igbafe mentioned the establishment of a dedicated task force. “We are working closely with the National Security Adviser (NSA) and have set strict guidelines for private jet owners to ensure compliance with FAAN’s regulations,” he added.
The AVSEC Director also shared insights into future plans to integrate advanced technology into airport security operations. “We are looking at implementing artificial intelligence (AI) systems as part of our access control measures. This technology will enhance our ability to detect prohibited items and alert the command center immediately,” he stated, indicating a forward-thinking approach to security management.
“What we came the second international runway had been closed for  over nine months. And we tried our best, the Managing Director, the Minister, the Director of Airport Operations and the Director of Engineering. They all put heads together, they released funds.
and it was re-opened.”
Moreover, AVSEC has made substantial progress in staff training and certification, ensuring that personnel meet ICAO standards. “Since taking office, we have successfully introduced a database system to track training and certification status for all AVSEC staff. We are also proud to host training programs at our Aviation Security Training Center, welcoming participants from neighboring countries,” said ACP Igbafe.
As the year progresses, ACP Igbafe is optimistic about the transformative changes underway. “By December, we aim to unveil a new face for aviation in Nigeria, one marked by enhanced security, efficiency, and international standards compliance,” he promised.
Under his leadership, AVSEC is set to redefine airport security in Nigeria, prioritizing safety, innovation, and international best practices.
