In a move set to bolster international travel and strengthen bilateral relations, Emirates Airlines will resume flight operations to Nigeria on Tuesday, October 1st, after a series of high-level negotiations between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, led a technical team to the UAE to engage in discussions focused on a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between the two nations.
During the talks, both countries worked towards resolving previous operational challenges and establishing a framework for future collaboration in the aviation sector. The negotiations culminated in a firm agreement that not only facilitates the resumption of Emirates flights to Nigeria but also grants Nigerian local airlines reciprocal rights to begin operations to the UAE. This new development is expected to enhance air travel options for passengers and contribute to both countries’ economic growth.
Speaking on the agreement, Minister Keyamo expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria-UAE aviation relations. “This marks a significant milestone in the relationship between our two countries. We have ensured that Nigerian airlines will benefit from this deal through reciprocal flight rights, which will provide more options for travelers and promote fair competition in the aviation industry,” Keyamo stated.
The new BASA is expected to pave the way for more robust partnerships, increase flight frequencies, and promote tourism and business exchanges between Nigeria and the UAE. As preparations for the resumption of Emirates flights to Nigeria are finalized, local airlines are gearing up to establish their presence in the UAE market, creating further opportunities for growth and international expansion.
