In a tense moment at Lagos Airport, an Embraer 145 aircraft operated by premium services provider XeJet Airlines veered off the runway and came to rest in the grassy area adjacent to Runway 18Left. The aircraft, having departed from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, encountered the incident around 11:30 am on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

Reports indicate that the Aerodrome Fire and Safety Rescue Unit of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) swiftly responded, closing the 18Left runway to all air traffic as they mobilized to assist the passengers.

This unsettling event unfolds just weeks after a similar incident involving a Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-82. Notably, both incidents occurred during wet conditions, with rain preceding the XeJet aircraft’s landing.

The aircraft involved bears the registration number 5NBZZ, and at the time of the incident, it carried 52 passengers and three crew members. The closure of the 18Left runway ensued as authorities, including the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), commenced their inquiries.

Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, Director of the Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Department at NSIB, confirmed the incident, noting that investigative teams were dispatched to the scene to gather further details. The full extent of the incident remains under investigation at this time.
